Spatial exclusion is a complex social challenge in urbanizing peripheries, emerging from the interplay of structural forces and individual agency.
This study examines how youth aged 18–35 in Pakdasht perceive and experience spatial exclusion, and its implications for their social trajectories. Using 16 semi-structured interviews, thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke was applied. The analytical framework integrates Goffman’s stigma, Harvey’s spatial poverty and urban deprivation policy, and theories of agency and social hope (Lueck, Bryant, Allard).
Results indicate that spatial exclusion in Pakdasht is driven by urban poverty, migrant settlement dynamics, social deviance, infrastructural insufficiencies, and place-based stigma. These factors foster the internalization of exclusion and a pervasive sense of isolation among youth. However, the responses are heterogeneous: some young people exercise agency to redefine their social identities and actively engage in community processes; others resign to prevailing conditions or sustain hope for change. These findings suggest that addressing spatial exclusion in peri-urban and rural-adjacent contexts requires integrated interventions: enhancing youth agency, mitigating social despair, and implementing inclusive urban-rural development policies that respond to youth-specific socio‑economic and cultural needs. Such policies should target structural inequalities and empower local actors in decision-making and community-building processes.
The study contributes to rural and peri-urban development literature by highlighting the multilayered, reproduced nature of spatial exclusion and youth-led resilience strategies in marginalized settlements.
