Individuality is often examined in relation to the transition from an agricultural economy to an industrial and specialized economy in the modern world, especially in the West—societies where social solidarity is more organic and based on labor regulations. However, in societies like Iran, where modernity has mostly entered through technology and lifestyle changes, individualism is more often regarded as an anomic condition rather than true individuality. This is because individuals gradually lose the ability to maintain coherent connections with traditional collective life and do not feel aligned with societal rules due to lack of participation in economic production. In such a situation, individuals may interpret their behavior based on immediate personal gain and fear of others in their lives. The main aim of this research is to explore how individualism forms in Iran considering modernity and traditional life, and how individuals, based on their social position, prefer to interpret their behaviors.
This study employs anthropological methodology, including observation and interviews with ordinary people and socio-cultural experts, to approach the formation of individualism in Iran and analyze its anomic condition. The findings show that on one hand, individuals in nuclear families learn to move beyond the collective values tied to traditional extended families and even religious values associated with collective life, relying instead on economic life values or goals of survival and progress. On the other hand, even the sexual patterns of nuclear families are neglected due to economic challenges and the emergence of digital individuality. The concept of economic progress in the neoliberal world can influence minds to view the “other” as a competitor or obstacle to progress. Here, individuals value social-religious values or coexist with the “other” only if that value or person is defined as a tool for personal benefit.
