Migration from small cities to metropolises, which indicates imbalance and unequal development in the settlement systems, is one of the key issues that Iran face it. The aim of this article is to know the degree of desire for inter-city migration in Iran and to investigate the effect of socio-demographic factors.
A secondary analysis of the data from the National Survey of the Social, Cultural and Moral Situation of the Iranian Society in 2015-2016 is used. The sample size includes 78,900 people aged 18 and over living in 426 cities.
The results revealed that 35 percent of the respondents have a tendency to migrate between cities and are considered as potential urban migrants. Also, the results showed that people with a tendency to inter-city migration are often female, never married, young, university educated, employed, and from ethnic minorities. In addition, results of logistic regression indicated that demographic factors (including gender, age, marital status, education level, employment, and ethnicity) and social factors (such as; household socio- economic status, feeling of relative deprivation, social satisfaction, and sense of security) significantly affect the tendency to inter-city migration.
Therefore, understanding the reasons and motivations behind inter-city migration will be beneficial for sustainable development and the management and policy-making of internal migration.
