Abstract
The aim of this study is to identify the problems and issues of Gachi villages from the villagers’ point of view, to raise their awareness of the roots and causes of their problems, and also to identify the possible consequences of these problems on the social life of the study area. To achieve this goal, a qualitative method was used, specifically focus groups, semi-structured interviews and observations. The research area includes the villages of Gachi in Malekshahi county of Ilam. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis method. The results showed that lack of grazing land, destruction of grasslands, lack of fodder, severe shortage of drinking water and water for livestock, unemployment, low expertise and skills, inadequate roads between villages and the city center, inadequate roads between farms, lack of utilities and low penetration of cell phones and internet, and lack of health services are the main problems identified in the villages of rural Gachi. At the root of many of these problems is the lack of educational, social and service infrastructures, lack of health infrastructures, lack of qualified medical personnel to provide health services, drought and drying up of springs, negligence of officials, remoteness and lack of access to villages. Poverty, soil erosion and decreasing quality of agricultural land, worsening illiteracy, migration to urban areas, spread of theft, interpersonal and sectarian disputes, weakening of family ties, stress, aggression and increasing violence, etc. are the main consequences of the existing problems that have increased the social, economic, natural and psychological damage in Gachi village.
